A Day of Volunteering at the YWCA

Last week the Thomsen team took a day of volunteering at the YWCA Cass Clay. Below, Jocelyn from the HR department, discusses highlights of the day volunteering at the YWCA.

Getting Involved

Shelter means a lot to us as a home builder. Together our team works to help our clients build the perfect home to lay their heads down every night. As the largest shelter serving women and children in the North Dakota and Northwestern Minnesota, the YWCA is recognized as one of the longest standing nonprofits in the Fargo-Moorhead area. The YWCA shelter and various programs offered have helped more than 16,000 women since opening on University in 2004.

What We Learned

The YWCA has many programs for women and their children, but most of us learned that day that they also offer supportive housing. Women have the opportunity to stay in a fully furnished apartment that costs 30% of what she earns annually. The supportive housing also had to be kid friendly, and the playhouse pictured below was one project we worked on. We also worked on various tasks outside on the housing grounds.

How We Helped

The Thomsen team went in small groups throughout the day to volunteer. The morning groups focused on washing, cleaning, and weeding while the afternoon focused on staining, painting, and mulching. Some of us hadn’t volunteered with the YWCA and this eye-opening experience got us out of the office and helping others.

As a homebuilder, we were excited to help an organization such as the YWCA who works with women and children in our community. Thank you to those who volunteered!

Navigating an Open House with Thomsen Homes

Have you toured a Thomsen open house? If you haven’t or you’re interested in touring a Thomsen home, Sunday is a great day to do so. Every Sunday, Thomsen Homes has multiple homes available to view between the hours of 1 – 4:30 pm. Attending an open house is a great way to walk through the home and learn details about the neighborhood and surroundings. Plus it gives you the chance to tour the great house plans and layouts that Thomsen Homes has to offer.

Questions to ask

When going to a Thomsen open house, you may come equipped with questions to ask about the home and/or the Thomsen Homes building process. During our open houses, each home has a Real Estate Agent knowledgeable of Thomsen Homes’ process and quality that we invest into each and every build. During your tour of the home, feel free to ask any questions you may have about the home. Some example questions include:

What’s included in the pricing?
What is the square footage? How many beds/baths?
What is the neighborhood like? Parks/walking paths?
What is the school district?
What are some similar homes that are in different areas of town?
What is the process like building with Thomsen Homes?

Things to do during an open house

Don’t be afraid to explore the house. Open closet doors to check out the storage space. Open all the cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms to ensure that your personal belongings will fit in the allotted space.

Walk through the entire home, even into closets and small spaces to get a feel for the layout and examine whether the space fits your lifestyle. You can even bring a measuring tape to measure out space for your furniture to ensure that it fits in the layout.

Throwing a backyard bash

Summer has arrived and it’s the perfect time to host a backyard bash in your new home. Use the tips below to help plan the perfect backyard bash that your guests will be talking about all summer.

Themes

Throwing a themed bash is a great way to liven up the party. Some popular themed backyard parties are: Hawaiian, campfire, modern fiesta, classic garden party and more. Will kids be attending the party or just adults? This might make adjustments to what kind of theme you decide to go with.

Plenty of Food & Drinks

You will want to plan ahead for your food and drinks. Are you catering in food or are you going to grill your food? If catering, order ahead of time. Pick up the food and prepare buffet style before your guests arrive. If grilling, prep food the day of your party, but before guests arrive. You can either grill after guests have arrived or before. If grilling before, plan on putting the food somewhere that it will stay warm before it’s time to eat.

Games

Provide entertainment for your guests. From kids to adults, everyone likes to play games. Depending on your party theme, there are many different games you can proide. Classic games include: cornhole, jumbo jenga, ladder golf, darts, ring toss and many more. You can also provide other games such as carnival, Olympic, water games, the list is endless. Pinterest is a great source for backyard activities if you become stuck on planning games for your backyard bash.

Unique Ideas

Besides games, there are some other unique activities you can add to your party. An outdoor movie night can easily be set up if you have an inflatable outdoor screen (or just a sheet and a fence) and a projector. Having a karaoke machine is also another unique idea to help entertain your guests and make your backyard bash one of a kind. Set up an outdoor photo booth with props is another fun idea for guests. They will forever have photos of your awesome backyard bash!

5 Tips to make moving stress free

Moving soon? Moving and packing doesn’t have to be stressful or difficult. Use the five tips below to help create a stress free move to your new home.

Start Early

Pack everything you don’t use 1-2 weeks before you move. Use paper plates and plastic utensils for the last week or two. You’ll be able to use these in your new home before you unpack too. If you have a garage, start putting the boxes in the garage so they are out of the way.

Purge before you pack

Before packing, get rid of as much as you can. You won’t have to pack it, move it and unpack it after you move. This includes:

Any expired food, cleaners and medicine
Worn-out items such as towels, old clothes, and sheets
Any unused items that you have been holding on to should be disposed of
Mismatched items such as socks and tupperware containers
Old items such as mail, magazines, make up, reading glasses, and old electronics such as a cell phone or radio

Keep the hanger

Don’t remove clothes from their hangers. Pack your clothes with the hangers in either hanging boxes or cover with a trash bag. When you decide to unpack your closet, you will save time by already having your clothes on hangers.

Be organized

Organization is key when moving. Use different colors of tape for different rooms. Place a small piece of tape on one corner of a box and make a key that includes all the colors and their coordinating rooms. You can also create an excel sheet to keep track of what items are in which boxes. When you move and need to find an item, you will be able to locate the item very easily and quickly.

Pack the moving truck

When packing the moving truck, pack by room. Place boxes for each room next to each other in the truck. When it’s time to unpack, you will be able to easily unpack one room at a time and won’t have to run boxes around your new home.

Moving can be stressful. Just remember the five tips above to create a stress free move.

Last Weekend of the FM Spring Parade of Homes

The weather is warming up and it’s starting to feel like summer. Spend your sunny weekend outside touring our six Parade models, all located within blocks of each other. This weekend is the final weekend of the 2017 FM Spring Parade of Homes, so if you haven’t made it out to visit a Thomsen home, this weekend is your last chance!

We have six homes on the Parade PLUS three additional model homes open for touring. We are very excited to showcase two new floor plans – a new two story and a new slab-on-grade home. All Parade homes and models are located in one convenient location, Brooks Harbor in West Fargo. Our six Parade homes have all been fabulously staged by Eco Chic Boutique.
