For 10 plus years Thomsen Homes has built quality homes for families and individuals to call home. We have many reasons to stay passionate in what we do but one reason we love what we do is because the people we serve and the communities we work in. Aligned with our company core values and embedded in our companies culture we are on a mission to “GIVE BACK”.

Hero Build 2017

Some upcoming volunteer projects our team will be working on is the Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity Hero Build 2017. We are so excited to be part of such a special build in remembrance of Police Officer Jason Moszer. The future homeowner of this Hero Build is Danielle John a survivor of domestic sex trafficking and has devoted her life to helping other survivors find hope and rebuild. She will live in this home with her children and have the opportunity to provide them a secure, safe, affordable place to call home.

We are looking forward to contributing to this project and stay tuned to the blog of updates on this Hero Build and other Thomsen Give Back projects.

Thomsen Giveback: Great Plains Food Bank

Their mission and vision is simple: end hunger through community partnerships to provide a hunger-free North Dakota and Clay County Minnesota. The Thomsen crew spent some of the day learning about what the Great Plains Food Bank offers to those in need within our community and our state.

Spending time at Great Plains Food Bank

We had the opportunity to tour the Great Plains warehouse and learn the facts about hunger and the need in our area. To put things in perspective one in nine people are seeking emergency food assistance in the state of North Dakota and Clay county Minnesota. That statistic was alarming for us to even imagine. Great Plains Food Bank is the only food pantry in North Dakota, which means they have a lot of ground to cover. They help reach those in need by delivering food to food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters and other programs feeding those who are hungry.

Lucky for us, there was plenty to do! Right before we arrived, they received a donation of 89,000 pounds of potatoes and corn. We spent the day packaging potatoes and fueling our competitiveness between teams to see who could get the most packed. We went in three shifts to the food bank to help pack potatoes in 5 lbs. saks. The first group packed 2,259 pounds, the second group packed 2,159 pounds and the last group came through with a whopping 2,351 pounds!

This year a big initiative as a team is to increase our involvement in our community and give our employees time to give back to a community that has given so much to us, and allowed us to continue to grow! These eye-opening experiences give us the opportunity to see the need in our communities and help be apart of the solution. Stay tuned for more Thomsen giveback experiences!

A Day of Volunteering at the YWCA

Last week the Thomsen team took a day of volunteering at the YWCA Cass Clay. Below, Jocelyn from the HR department, discusses highlights of the day volunteering at the YWCA.

Getting Involved

Shelter means a lot to us as a home builder. Together our team works to help our clients build the perfect home to lay their heads down every night. As the largest shelter serving women and children in the North Dakota and Northwestern Minnesota, the YWCA is recognized as one of the longest standing nonprofits in the Fargo-Moorhead area. The YWCA shelter and various programs offered have helped more than 16,000 women since opening on University in 2004.

What We Learned

The YWCA has many programs for women and their children, but most of us learned that day that they also offer supportive housing. Women have the opportunity to stay in a fully furnished apartment that costs 30% of what she earns annually. The supportive housing also had to be kid friendly, and the playhouse pictured below was one project we worked on. We also worked on various tasks outside on the housing grounds.

How We Helped

The Thomsen team went in small groups throughout the day to volunteer. The morning groups focused on washing, cleaning, and weeding while the afternoon focused on staining, painting, and mulching. Some of us hadn’t volunteered with the YWCA and this eye-opening experience got us out of the office and helping others.

As a homebuilder, we were excited to help an organization such as the YWCA who works with women and children in our community. Thank you to those who volunteered!
